Marzia Mortati

PhD, Marzia Mortati is an Associate Professor of Design at the Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano, where she teaches Service Design and Innovation, with a particular emphasis on their intersections with Artificial Intelligence and public sector transformation. Her research spans service design processes, digital transformation, and the role of AI and Big Data in shaping public services.

An established scholar in design-led policy and governance, Mortati has published extensively since 2008 in leading journals such as Design Issues, Technovation, and Policy Design and Practice. Her leadership roles complement her academic contributions: She is Executive Director of the European Academy of Design, Associate Editor of The Design Journal, and Academic Director of the International Master in AI for Public Services (AI4Gov), developed with top European institutions.

Mortati is also a founding member of PoGoSig, a research network under the Design Research Society focused on policy and governance. From 2014 to 2022, she coordinated Politecnico’s role in the MEDes program—Master of European Design—of which she is also an alumna. Her international academic training includes the Glasgow School of Art, Konstfack in Stockholm, and Imagination Lancaster.

Her expertise in European research policy is evidenced by her involvement in pioneering projects such as Design in European Policy (DeEP), Design for Europe, DigiMooD, and NetZeroCities. Through her multifaceted work, Marzia Mortati has become a central figure in advancing design as a strategic tool for governance and digital transformation innovation.
